3 Ways to Keep your training interesting
As I was out doing my long slow training run today I thought to myself what is my message to share this week…
And then it came to me pretty much in a flash. The reason that I look forward to running every Sunday comes down to 3 simple things.
I highly recommend that you add all these ideas into your training programme to keep it fresh and exciting.
1. Go & explore. By running somewhere different each week it helps make the longer training runs interesting. Today our training buddy, Lee organised our run out in Hobsonville. We ducked and dived on and off bush tracks, we followed the coast, and we had amazing views up the harbour to the city. If you go exploring the time goes by so much quicker and you will be surprised at how many hidden gems you can find near by.
2. Train with friends. It really does help if you have friends to do your longer training runs with, and it means that you can stick to an agreed time to get started (avoids any procrastination) . It is a great way to catch up on the weeks happenings and a great strategy to keep you distracted when going the distance.
3. Keep off the main roads. I am personally a big fan of finding bush tracks & pathways to run on. They normally wind in and out of neighbourhoods and along coast lines and they are far more interesting to run on than the main road. It means you aren’t sucking in too many car fumes. It makes you realise just how lucky we are to live in such an amazing country with so much on offer right at our back door.
That wraps up week 7 of my New York Marathon training programme. I trust you have fun exploring some new places and I’ll drop you a few more inspired tips next week.
