Accountability is the key to training success

Are you letting the rain stop you in your tracks?

This morning as I drove to meet my friend for our 24km training run the heavens opened up. I was pretty tempted to do a quick U turn and get back inside, it was not only pouring with rain but it was still dark. We both commented that we weren’t sure if we would have been quite so motivated on our own.

Because we made the commitment to each other we both showed up. Quite simply having a training buddy is one of the best mechanisms that you can put in place to avoid procrastination and get the job done.

The funny thing about our run today, is that even though is was pouring on the way to the start we completed the 2 1/2 hour run with 2 small showers.  And we felt ecstatic upon completing our run. For my friend this means a weekend away with her Husband, and a chance to relax knowing that she doesn’t have a big run to do in the weekend.

What I am noticing at the moment is a lot of cases of the winter blues.  People aren’t getting the endorphins kicking around their body and so they feel even more down in the dumps.

Remember that physical activity is going to make you feel 100% better about your day.  And by slipping on a rain coat, slipping out the door, and slipping some exercise into your day you can avoid the winter blues.

Next time you let the weather stop you in your tracks just think of the hot shower waiting at the end and how much better you will feel for getting out there.
